Again fom the book "Raising Good Children" and we use it in our parenting courses....
THE PARENT APPROACH...
1. Maintain a positive relationship with your child and strong family life.
2. Spend time together, touch physically, communicate and try to solve probelsm together.
3. Help your child develop a sence of identity and positive self-concept
- treat sons and daughters equally
- dont compare your child with others
- support their efforts to find friends who help them feel good about themself
- help them develop their interests and abilities
- help them break the "put-down" habit
- don't control your child through guilt ( "I've done everything i can!" - "god is not going to like this")
4. Teach your child moral values, especially "standing up for what is right" , not just " going along with the crowd"
5. Balance independence and control: say "yes" when you can but "no" when you must.
6. Allow your child safe ways to rebel ( music, dress, hair styles).
